HOWTO: 64bit Flash

17Jan10

Ever since I installed 9.10 64bit, Firefox has just not been working right, it kept crashing for no apparent reason, just returning an “Illegal Instruction” error. I like undoubtedly many others blamed Flash, but it turns out I was to blame, well, my CPU at least. This post on Ubuntu Forums soon fixed it. Here’s the guts :)

Download the linked archive, extract and cd to it. Then run

gcc -fPIC -shared -nostdlib -lc -oflashplugin-lahf-fix.so flashplugin-lahf-fix.c

Finally copy the resultant .so file to

/usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/libflashplayer.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

That’s it :)
