About

I’m an Irish Computer Science student, and a Linux user. Like so many others, I started out on Ubuntu, and though I still use Ubuntu on occasion, you’ll find plenty of other distros mentioned here, often a bit of Windows material, on rare occasions, I get the opportunity to experiment with Mac machines.

I’ve learnt a lot with Linux, but the beauty is that I’ve so much yet to learn, everyday is a new day, something new always crops up.

If you find something you like here, or which helps you, let me know! Leave a comment, send me a PM on UbuntuForums or chat to me on Identica or Twitter. I welcome all critism and responses. If you have any ideas on HowTos, or posts you think I should do, send them!

Most importantly, enjoy your stay, and come back every now and again.

  1. Hey I noticed the AD Free Blog poster. Did you pay wordpress to remove adds from your blog or did you just put the poster up and the adds went away. I don’t know. I only started getting ads put on my blog when I started to get substantial traffic. I don’t know but I would like to know what you did. Sincerely Tobias.

WordPress Ads work (as far as I know) on site popularity. My site is low in the rankings, and therefore, doesn’t get any ads. WordPress also cycle ads, so that one specific blog doesn’t always have ads. Like you mentioned, you can purchase a “No-Ads” WordPress upgrade, which guarantees an ad-free blog for life.

Personally, I didn’t purchase the upgrade (due to lack of funds). My Ad-Free Blog poster is simply to state that I’m not going to put ads on this site, and that I do not receive any payment from any ads that do appear here, which is explained here.

At the end of the day, I pay nothing for this hosting. It costs WordPress a considerable amount to host the blogs that they do, and if there way of making money is by placing some small text ads on my blog from time to time, I’m ok with that.

Your blog by the way is very interesting, and a great resource, that I imagine I’ll be linking to in the UF Beginner Section.

  2. Why thank you. I do believe that placing payed advertising on a website should only be done in order to pay for the hosting (in my case I don’t pay for hosting) and for the Domain (I do pay for that) However, WordPress doesn’t pay me anything yet. According to there policy they will spit earnings with me if my traffic reaches approximately 2000 visits a day. (I get about 200). That really is beyond the point though, I don’t believe in advertising, because it is far to often abused. Thanks for letting me know.

As for mentioning my website/blog I thank you, I need as many references as possible.
I love the blog name. (Once you reach about fifty visitors a day, I recommend you purchase the domain.) I like your blog. I think I will mention it on my personal blog. I hope you will check out some of my videos and leave some comments. They are always welcome. I always find comments more helpful than statistics.

I will indeed. Like I said, they seem like they’d be really useful for a beginner. Add to that the fact that the blog is so well laid out (brilliant theme by the way).

I hadn’t really thought about purchasing the domain, but perhaps it’s something I should look into.

Thanks mate. Make sure to cast an eye back here every once in a while, it’s always changing ;)

To be honest, looking at your site, I don’t see how much of my content would be of use to you. Which articles in particular were you speaking about?
